Over 6,000 killed in Guatemala in 2013, mostly shot

Six thousand and seventy two people were believed to have died violently in Guatemala in 2013, slightly more than in 2012, and 4,674 of them were shot to death, the daily La Prensa Libre reported on 3 January, citing forensic figures. The daily reported 24 criminal deaths on New Year's Day 2014, a drop from 35 counted for 1 January 2013. The state coroner's office INACIF had reported 6,025 suspected violent deaths in 2012, in a national population of just over 15 million; its figures indicated Guatemala's capital to be the locality with most homicides.
