No less than 65 - mostly suspected criminals - were killed through 1-4 August in incidents around Mexico that included gun battles between two drug cartels. At least 54 were reported killed on 1-3 August in fighting between the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas in the north-central state of Zacatecas and in shootouts between state forces and gunmen in Reynosa and Culiacán in north-eastern and north-western Mexico. No less than 46 died in the shootouts between the Gulf and Zetas cartels. These began on 1 August when members of the Gulf Cartel attacked a convoy of 14 cars said to be carrying some 80 members of the Zetas between the districts of Fresnillo and Valparaíso in the state of Zacatecas, and continued the next day with shooting in Jérez, a district east of the state capital Zacatecas, Europa Press reported on 4 August, citing Mexico's La Jornada and police. Eight were reported killed on 3 August in shooting between police and criminals in Reynosa in the state of Tamaulipas and in Culiacán in Sinaloa, El País reported on 4 August; reports did not immediately state if any policemen had died. In the Estado de México in central Mexico, soldiers shot dead three suspected criminals on 3 August in the district of Luvianos, Milenio reported, citing the Mexican defence ministry. One of the dead was identified in other reports as a local chief of the cartel Familia Michoacana. The daily also reported the killings on 3-4 August of three men around the northern state of Chihuahua. One appeared to have been beaten to death with one or more baseball bats in Ciudad Juárez, one stabbed at home either in that city or in the state capital Chihuahua and another shot at a roadside ambush in the district of Guadalupe y Calvo, Milenio reported on 4 August. Five people were also killed or executed in incidents in the north-western and western states of Sinaloa and Jalisco on 4 and early on 5 August, La Jornada reported on 5 August. Three were farmers - one of them being 17 years old - whose decapitated bodies were found in the district of Concordia in Sinaloa, and two, policemen shot in an ambush in the district of Ahualulco de Mercado.
