Colombian activist killed

A land activist was found dead in northern Colombia on 15 June, the latest of dozens killed in past years while reclaiming lands stolen by armed gangs, El Pais reported on 17 June. President Juan Manuel Santos condemned the killing of Jairo Martínez, apparently murdered by unidentified individuals outside the city of Montería, in the Sucre department. Sixty such activists have reportedly been murdered since 2007, 17 of them since June 2011. They were mostly farmers expelled from their plots by paramilitaries, amid the disorder of an ongoing civil war with the FARC guerrillas. Santos has promised to restore these lands and aims to return half, about three million hectares, by 2014, El Pais reported.
