More dogs poisoned in Mexico City, but "police indifferent"

Some 30 or possibly more dogs were poisoned in the Xochimilco sector of Mexico City in the first 10 months of 2026, and perhaps 50 in 2025, echoing recent pet killings in the capital's prosperous Condesa district though this time, without police concern, La Jornada reported on 1 November. The main zone was in San Luis Tlaxialtemalco in the Xochimilco sector, traditionally the capital's horticultural hub. The dogs were in fact suspected to have been poisoned to avoid their trampling on crops, using poisoned chicken skin, the daily stated. Yet local animal rights activist Karina Cortés was cited as complaining that nothing was being done by police or the courts, certainly in comparison with their mobilization in the Condesa and Roma districts, homes to wealthy Mexicans and numerous foreigners. Local dog owners, she said, were also doing little, being unaware of their rights and the fact that killing animals was a jailable offence.
