El Salvador sends more troops to Haiti...

El Salvador had "more than 2,000" troops in Haiti on 28 October for an ongoing operation to find four Salvadoran technicians thought to have been kidnapped by gangs on 18 October. The reinforcement followed a phone conversation between El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele and the prime minister of Haiti, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, and suggested closer collaboration against gangs between the states, agencies reported. The website elsalvador.com cited a Salvadoran foreign ministry document referring briefly to the conversation and expressing El Salvador's readiness to "keep backing operations against the gangs in that country." This was an unusual foreign intervention for El Salvador and it appeared as if the Bukele government was exporting its iron-fisted response to crime abroad. Regional conservatives have praised Bukele's war on gangs and countries like Costa Rica even built a maximum-security prison similar to El Salvador's CECOT. Bukele had warned earlier that his country could help suppress Haiti's rampant gangs, insisting these were not "empty words." Separately, Peru's conservative President Keiko Fujimori arrived in El Salvador for a four-day visit that would include talks on healthcare and crime, meeting with Bukele and a visit to the CECOT gaol.
