Mexican troops "likely" shot dead cartel leader
Mexico's navy ministry stated there was "solid evidence" that troops gunned down on 7 October Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, the founder and "main leader" of The Zetas drug cartel, in a shootout in Sabinas in the northern state of Coahuila. Marines shot dead two suspected Zetas gunmen in the locality of Poblados near Sabinas after a patrol was fired on from a car, and believed one was Lazcano or El Lazca, Proceso reported on 8 October. The Mexican government had offered almost three million USD in Mexican currency for information leading to his capture, while the United States offered five million USD.
