Ten reported killed around Mexico
Police besieged a suspected criminal safe-house in the western Mexican state of Guerrero early on 8 October and killed three gunmen inside after an hour-long gun fight, Proceso reported. Shots were initially fired at policemen as they approached the house in the locality of Xaltianguis, forcing them to call reinforcements. A land activist was separately shot dead on a bus in the state of Veracruz, while travelling to Mexico City to formally head an association, Proceso reported. Abel Valdivia González was to represent sugar-cane growers in the district of Acatlán de Pérez Figueroa in the central state of Oaxaca. Assassins drove ahead and blocked the late-night bus he was travelling on, boarded the vehicle and shot him before other passengers. Also: troops shot dead three gunmen on 7 or 8 October in the locality of Las Palmas in the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas; in Tlalmanalco in Estado de México, a young couple were shot dead in their car as they drove to pick up their children at school. Seventy bullets were fired into them, Proceso reported on 8 October. A policeman was found dead in a car - shot in the head - in the north-western state of Baja California.
